To calibrate Buxco's respiratory digital gas analyzer, two calibration gasses are needed:

1) 50% Oxygen - balance Nitrogen
2) 8% Carbon Dioxide - balance Nitrogen

Because these are pressurized gasses, the canisters (approximately 17-liter capacity, the size of a small propane canister) must be ordered by the enduser and shipped directly to the enduser's lab. Purchasing the canisters locally is preferred. Try a custom gas supplier or welding supply store.

Important! Mixed gas concentrations are never exactly what were ordered. It is important to request a Certificate of Analysis showing actual gas concentrations in each canister (Nitrogen, Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Other). The actual values from the certificate will be entered into the software prior to calibration.

For each gas canister, the enduser should purchase a gas regulator. These should be available through the gas supplier. If appropriate regulators cannot be found, contact Buxco for assistance.

Calibration gas bags are also needed. These can be ordered directly from Buxco and will normally be included with a metabolism system.

Operation

For normoxia (room air) studies it is usually most economical to use a push bias flow pump, available from Buxco. Compressed air cylinders can also be used.

For hypoxia and hypercapnia studies, bulk gas cylinders should be provided. Cylinders of individual gasses can be purchased and mixed in the lab, or custom preblended mixtures can be purchased.

A pressure regulator is needed for each bulk gas cylinder. Buxco recommends the Airgas Y12-244B regulator (0-50 psi range).
